Sex and drugs and rock and roll are all that Jonesy needs. Murder, drug smuggling, gangsters and cops are more than he ever wanted. Sex and drugs and rock and roll are all that Jonesy needs. Murder, drug smuggling, gangsters and cops are more than he ever wanted. When Bad Apple stumbles through the door of Jones’s Manhattan apartment, he’s frantic with a story about a drug deal gone wrong, a dead gangster packed in a steamer trunk in his car, and he’s begging Jones to help dispose of the body and cover up the crime. It’s New York City 1978, Jones is a guitarist in the rising punk band the Mobsters, a junkie, yet no criminal mastermind, but he owes Apples a big favor.
Fearing cops and vengeful gangsters, Jones decides to get the band on a quick West Coast tour and get the hell out of Manhattan. During the tour he comes under the wrath of punk rock hating Southern California cops and gets busted for possession. Facing prison time and massive lawyer fees his genius solution is to go to Peru and smuggle large quantities of cocaine back through US Customs in order to raise some quick cash for his legal fees. An East Coast tour beckons a return to New York City with Trebor, Ritchie Dagger and the rest of the merry punk rock pranksters, body dumps, too much junk and the fear of gangsters or a holiday at Riker’s Island.
THE OPIUM KINGS or STRUNG OUT STORIES FROM A SIX STRING SLINGER is a collection of stories about a rock and roll band’s beginnings, rise, implosions and aftermath due to murderous friends, criminal cops, bad addictions and worse decisions. The names have been changed to protect the guilty…
Fans of Jim Carroll - Basketball Diaries, Jack Kerouac - On the Road, Hunter S. Thompson - Fear and Loathing, Irvine Welsh - Trainspotting, William Burroughs - Junky etc... will find THE OPIUM KINGS one of the books that tell it like it is and where the imagery is painted with words in an electric film noir haze with touches of Dali and Basquiat. Where the characters are a band of musical criminals that leave a dust-cloud of decadence and musical vision from coast to coast. They could piss off cops and judges just as quick as they could get through a three minute punk n roll rocker of a song.
If Tom Waits, Johnny Thunders, Jack Kerouac, Joe Strummer, Jim Carroll, Keith Richards, William Burroughs, Thomas de Quincy, Hunter S. Thompson and Sid Vicious were telling stories together about a punk n roll, rock n roll band of criminals over single malt and assorted controlled substances the result just might be THE OPIUM KINGS or STRUNG OUT STORIES OF A SIX STRING SLINGER... It's one of those books that you are going to want a printed copy of until it gets torn and frayed, worn out and dog eared and then you'll go out of your way to make sure you have a back-up copy. Or you'll steal your ex-lover's copy on your way out the door..
